Getting Back in the Groove

dreamstime_xl_30323641

They say that when you fall off a horse, the best thing is to get right back on. The rationale is that the longer you delay, the harder it is to overcome any fear you have from falling off in the first place. In other words, you lose your groove.

Well, I can tell you from recent personal experience, the longer your out of the groove, the harder it is to get it back. This is my first blog post in almost 7 months. Not that I don’t have a a huge file of “blog post ideas,” it’s just that once I lost the grove last July, then the more time that passed, the harder it was to get down to it and write a post.

After years of fairly regular blog posts, it took quite a bit to throw me off my groove. It started with my horse; who literally threw me off. Twice. The first time I landed relatively gracefully (and unhurt), but the second time (having gotten right back on her as is recommended) I came down hard. I don’t tuck, roll or bounce as well as I used to, and my knee took the brunt of it. One emergency room visit later, and I was in a brace and on crutches.

Then, 5 days later, while I was barely hobbling around on my crutches, Jere, the man of my life, had “some pains” in his abdomen. After a few hours of that, we called my daughter to drive us to the emergency room and 5 hours later he was on an air ambulance to the nearest heart surgery center and 3 hours after that was in open heart surgery getting a new valve for his heart. It was a close call. The surgeon said he probably had a “few hours” if they hadn’t gotten them into surgery when they did.

Jere was in the hospital for a week, during which I was gimping along on my crutches or being wheeled in a wheel-chair by by daughter or Jere’s sister. How embarrassing! Once we got home, we were a real pair. For a month he wasn’t supposed to drive, so I was driving with my bad knee. Needless to say, we stayed home as much as possible.  The good news is that Jere healed well and is now physically fit (better than me, for sure), and walking 2 – 3 miles a day.

As for my knee, after doctor visits and an MRI it was determined that I had a “sprain, extreme bone bruising on the tibia, fluid on the knee and a torn miniscus.”  After physical therapy, and more doctor visits, I finally had surgery on October 30th. In the last few months I have been using a stationary bike and walking with Jere several times a week. I still can’t go as far as he can, but I am up to about a mile or a little more at a time.

Needless to say, with all this, I definitely lost the groove for many things in my life… my blog posts among them.

So, here I am. Posting to my blog and making a determined effort to get back into the groove. As daunting as it may seem, my goal is to get back to regular posts. Now I just need to go through that file of “blog post ideas!”
